Who We Are
Amazement Square is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary, hands-on museum located in historic Downtown Lynchburg, Virginia. Additionally, it is the ONLY museum in Virginia to be named a Certified Autism Center.
The museum offers four floors of hands-on, interactive exhibits designed to make learning fun. At Amazement Square, we believe that creative play is one of the most important ways children learn and grow! Guests of all ages can paint on the walls of our paint box, explore life on the farm, create a rainstorm over downtown Lynchburg, float a boat down the James River, and even rock out on stage in a band of your own! Right in the center of the historic building is the Amazement Tower, this indoor play structure extends through all four floors of the museum offering an endless maze of slides, ladders, tunnels, and a zip-line!
Named one of Central Virginia’s favorite family spots, the Museum serves more than 90,000 people through general admission, school programs, outreach activities, workshops, and other special events each year representing guests from all 50 states and more than a dozen countries.
What We Offer
Exhibitions
Amazement Square houses ten permanent interactive exhibition galleries and a changing gallery for temporary and traveling exhibitions that explore global and regional topics in the arts, humanities, and STEM concepts.
Outreach
As part of its mission to serve children and adults of all backgrounds and abilities, Amazement Square extends its activities beyond the physical constraints of its facilities. Partnering with other local institutions, the museum has created a variety of programs that reach out to the under resourced, physically and mentally disabled, and culturally underrepresented. These initiatives strive to educate the general population about often overlooked groups and to encourage a tolerant understanding of differences, actively engage citizens in the arts and culture, and provide a range of hands-on learning opportunities that are free of charge to participants.
School Programs
Amazement Square is proud to offer our region educational enrichment opportunities for core areas such as mathematics, science, humanities, and literacy. Through our School Programs, the Museum’s Education Department enables students to experience interactive, multi-disciplinary discovery while aiding teachers in meeting state and national standards.
